PHOTO SHOOT TWO:
This is my second photo shoot that is based around the theme of isolation: below is the contact sheet that shows all of the images that I took within this photo shoot. From this I then went on to choose a few images and edited them in Photoshop to accentuate the emotions I wanted to convey within the images by altering colours, tones and cropping the images for more dramatic effect. This photo shoot is a follow on from the first shoot I did, developing the idea of conveying the various emotions surrounded by isolation through the colour I use in the images and through the body language and facial expressions of my subject.
PHOTO ONE:
From the closed body language of the subject and the subdued colour, the initial atmosphere that the viewers are able to see is one of loneliness and sadness which is conveying my theme of isolation perfectly. I was able to do this by using various editing techniques to accentuate emotions that I created through the positioning of my subject, the framing of my shot and the body language of the subject. By saturating the colour of the photograph to -43 I have created the faded and pale look to the image above: this is an important element that I have begun to use in many of my images as I feel that it enables me to create the strong emotions that are needed to convey my theme of isolation. I have also turned down the brightness of the image so that the sky didn't look as vivid as before I started to edit the image and the finshing touch was to turn down the contrast so that the lines in the image appeared softer and less defined.
I have also used the 'Rule of Thirds' my image to position the subject so that she became the focal point: if you were to divide the image up into 9 segments you would see that the subject is positioned within the central column and therefore within the 'Golden Rectangle'. This is a theory which suggests that whatever object is positioned in this 'golden rectangle' instantly becomes the centre of focus as this is the intial spot in the image that the human eye is drawn to. I have used this theory to my advantage in many of my images to ensure that the subject is the focal point as this is the part of the image that has enabled me to convey the emotions to the viewer and to create the appropriate atmosphere for the image.
The subject is looking out towards the empty and bleak landscape, reflecting her lifestyle and her empty emotions that seem to contrast against the usual persons lifestyle. This is accentuated by her closed body language, her hunched over shoulders and the fact that she is looking away from the camera: this image suggests that the form of isolation I am portraying here is not of the positive sort and that the subject longs to be at a better and busier place, reflecting her lifestyle again.

PHOTO TWO:
In this image I was inspired to edit it into black and white in the style of Andy Ellis: when I researched his style of photography I found that the black and white images he created had a larger impact in terms of the emotions and the atmosphere that was created within the piece. I found that this technique worked really well for me as the clouds in the sky became darker and a lot more noticeable, creating a darker atmosphere to the image and the landscape looked bleaker and emptier without the shades of greens and browns that were there before. I like the outcome of black and white images as the impact of being isolated was a lot heavier then when the image was in colour and I enjoyed playing around with the contract between the subject and the landscaope, creating contrasts between the two.
The emotions that I intended to convey within this piece are very similar to the image above: how the subject hates the idea of being alone and the thought of isolations scares her but the landscape reflects her bleak and empty lifestyle which leaves her alone a lot of the time. This has been reflected again by the body language of the subject, how her hunched shoulders close her body around her and how the hand holding her hair forward to her face suggests that she is shy and timid, helping to reflect the emotions she is feeling.
I like the composition of the image: how the subject is placed slightly off to the left hand side but still remains the centre of focus pleases me as this is an element that I wnated to keep running through my images. I used the blur tool on Photoshop whilst I was editing the image to blur the plants to the left hand side of the image more so that it looked like empty space and so that the detail in them didn't draw the viewers attention away from the subject. I also like the overall finish that I have acheieved on this image, how the sky looks dark and how the clouds contrast well against the more washed out landscape drawing even more attention to the subject as she is heavily contrasted compared to the fields. I think this image is very effective and portrays my theme of isolation very well through not only the body language and positioning of the subject but also through my editing and cropping of the image.
