PHOTO SHOOT EIGHT:
Below is the contact strip for my eighth photo shoot and my last stage of development for this project based around the theme of isolation. I have continued to develop the idea of showing trees in their natural landscape but alone in their own right, incorporating the techniques that I have developed from the initial inspiration I took from Jack Barnosky. I have chosen a few images to edit in a similar style to what I have done before and I will go on to develop my final image from this shoot.
PHOTO ONE:
I have used a heavier approach in terms of editing for this image to create the dramatic sky that you can see here: I have used the colour balance after turning my image into black and white to my advantage, along with the alteration of the levels of shadows and highlights as well as the brightness and contrast. I think that this sky works brilliantly with the large and majestic tree that has been silhouetted in the foreground, the highlighting that I have picked out in the sky has haloed the tree on the left hand side which is one of the conventions of Jack Barnsoky's photography that I hadn't been able to mimic until now. This effect was not only very effective within his images but it has had the same effect on my own, creating the atmosphere that I wanted to convey to the viewer and immediately drawing their focus to the tree that has been positioned slightly out of center. I am especially happy with the overall look of this image as I feel that I have created a very striking photograph that not only successfully portrays my theme of isolation but it also creates an atmosphere that can be looked at in a positive or a negative way. This is because I have used colours and tones that are usually associated with the bad sides of being isolated but I have framed and composed the image is such a way that the majesty and beauty of the scene conveys the happier and positive sides of isolation. I like this contrasting view when looking at this image as I feel I have managed to capture both sides of isolation within one image, showing the heavenly and blissful side through the halo's around the tree which were created by the light shining through and showing the darker sides of isolation through the silhouettes of the trees and bushes rather then having them as objects where you can see detail. |
PHOTO TWO:
This image has been directly inspired by the work of Jack Barnosky: I have captured the tree stood alone in it's natural landscape with only some fields and the clouds around it. The images that Jack produces are exactly like this: they all show a single tree that has been edited in black and white to give an appropriate atmosphere. I drew inspiration from these images to create my own set of photographs that I then went on to develop: I then decided to try and recreate images that look like his in more aspects then before to show how much inspiration I drew from him.
I carefully framed this image so that the tree was in the center at the top of the image as I thought that this was the most important part: I did not want the leaves at the top of the tree to be going off of the screen as I thought this would take away from the perspective of the image. I am happy with the overall finish of the image as I feel that the angle that the picture was taken from combined with the framing and composition has created a very effective image that has portrayed my theme of isolation successfully and has shown the origins from my ideas and development. I also think that the way I edit each of the images with the black and white tools and altering the levels and contrast give an even theme to each of my photo shoots and show my development through this idea and how I have settled on particular techniques that I feel work the best on showcasing the emotions and atmosphere that I want to convey in each of my images. The additional element of the graves in the bottom of the images adds to the overall effect that I am trying to achieve: conveying my theme of isolation the the viewer has been achieved through editing, framing, composition and choice of location so this added element that I was lucky enough to find has added the finishing touch I needed to these photos to create a big impact on the viewer. Not only are the trees stood alone against an old brick wall, they are also positioned in a cemetery which adds to the loneliness and solitude of the magnificent trees: although the graves are a sign of people they also act as a distant memory of the passing of people and not their current presence which then reflect my theme beautifully. This is my favourite set of images that I have taken so far, I love the effects that I have given to each photograph through my editing and framing of the shot and the overall effect and meanings that each image conveys to the audience relates to my theme of isolation.
