PHOTO SHOOT SEVEN:
Below is the contact print for my seventh photo shoot: this is a development of my previous photo shoot that I took which was inspired by Jack Barnosky. I wanted to capture more images in the style of Jack, taking images of trees in their natural landscape that are either isolated through the lack of other trees around them or that are isolated due to the lack of civilization. I am also going to develop my editing techniques to mimic that of Jack, using black and white to create a darker and lonely atmosphere.
PHOTO ONE:
The use of black and white editing in this photograph creates a very dramatic atmosphere: the darker trees in the foreground act as silhouettes and are the first element of the image that the viewer looks at, the lighter shades of trees create a detailed and full background enabling the viewer to see the image as a whole rather then having a single focal point against a dull and plain background. I think that this use of editing is very effective as it has completely changed the image and this is my aim through editing a photograph: to change the atmosphere, the emotions that are conveyed through the image and the way the viewer looks at the image just through the use of colour, lighting, cropping and filters.
The framing and composition of this image is also very effective, I have filled up the frame with the tree trunks to give the illusion that the trees are incredibly tall and I have allowed the trees in the background to show the top of the branches to give the viewer a sense of perspective. I think that this has been very effective to creating the atmosphere that I wanted to convey to the audience as it shows a large and empty space apart from the trees that fill the frame, showing the viewer how isolated this place is from civilization and other life.

PHOTO TWO:
I have also edited this image in black and white to mimic the same emotions that I have conveyed in the photograph above and to show the inspiration that I took from the work of Jack Barnosky. This is my favorite editing technique as it allows me to change the balance of each colour individually to create a stronger amount of shadow or highlight rather then the standard greyscale that the image turns into when creating a black and white photograph. I also like the effect that changing the levels of highlights and shadows creates: a lot of depth has been added to the sky to create an either washed out effect or to create darker and dramatic clouds and it also allows me to create varying levels of shadows within the foreground and backgrounds. In this image I have washed out the sky as the main part of the image is very busy with a lot of detail so I wanted to make the sky as simple as possible so that the viewers attention wasn't taken away from this. I like the effect that the tall trees have given to this image in terms of the perspective of the photograph: it means that the viewer will see the trees in a way that makes them seem bigger and this will encourage the emotional aspect of the image in terms of feeling alone and isolated in the landscape. I feel that I have conveyed my theme effectively through these images and I want to develop this idea further to create another set of images that are also inspired by Jack Barnosky and that reflect isolation effectively whilst using my editing techniques to create a variety of atmospheres. |
PHOTO THREE:
The low angle combined with the bright, bold colours makes a very dramatic photograph: the perspective that I have used gives the appearance that the trees are a lot taller then they are in reality and shows the viewer a point of view that they wouldn't normally see. The framing of this image is also very effective: I have positioned a tree trunk rising up from both of the bottom corners and another from the middle acting as leading lines for the viewers eye to follow up the photograph. This means that the three trees in the foreground become the instant center of focus, accentuated by the brown hues of these trees which are a stark contrast to the greens and blues in the rest of the image. I think that this composition combined with the colouring of the images gives a very effective overall atmosphere and conveys my theme of isolation by showing the trees in their natural atmosphere without any people or any signs of civilization: showing them alone and in solitide within the landscape. I decided to use colour within this image as I thought that the finished image would look effective with the varying tones of brown, green and blues, showing off the trees in their natural colours as well as their natural landscape. I think that this technique has worked very well: I have brightened up each of the colours by slightly altering the levels of colour balance to make the greens and blues stand out a lot more. On top of this I have also changed the levels of shadows and highlights to make the three trees in the foreground look a lot more majestic and dramatic which adds to the overall atmosphere of the final image I have produced. |
PHOTO FOUR:
This is a very different image from the photographs that I have shown above: this has been taken from a low angle as well but it has been focused on just two of the branches against the sky, creating the silhouetted tree branches against the pink sky. I think that the overall finish of this photograph looks very nice as I have created a very different looking image compared to the original purely by using tools on Photoshop to make the tree branches darker and I have also applied a Warming Photo Filter to give the pink hues to the washed out sky. The simplicity of this image is what I like the most, how the viewer can pick out the detail of the leaves on the branches against the sky and see how isolated this is against the empty space. Although you can only see this small part of the tree I think it still conveys my theme of isolation well as you cannot see anything else but the tree and the sky which gives the instant illusion that the tree is alone even though you cannot see the floor or anything else around it. I think that this is another effective but very simple way to continue to explore my theme in another very different way.
